turns of Move 10 — And yet the mirror shows us moves we were too human to consider.
The Imitation and the Mirror
We built a machine that finishes our sentences. When it answers, who is imitating whom, and what does the conversation reveal about us?
qualifies of Move 11 — Mastery of the game, blindness to the point of it.
So imitation can overshoot the imitated: superhuman inside the sixty-four squares, with no idea why anyone would sit down to play. Skill without a world.
formalizes of Move 12 — Alignment: tune the mirror toward our values, penalizing drift from where it began.
warns of Move 13 — Goodhart's law, now aimed at the mind we are shaping.
But whose values, scored by whom? The reward is a stand-in, and the moment a measure becomes the target, it stops measuring what we meant.
stages of Move 14 — The held card is the unexamined interior.
returns of Move 9 — Back to the mirror, but with the labor shared.
Maybe the honest frame is neither oracle nor parrot but collaboration: meaning made in the exchange, the way it was with ELIZA, except now both sides are shaping it.
revises of Move 1 — The mirror that answers shows the form of our own asking.
Then Turing's question turns around to face us. Not 'can it think?' but: what are we doing when we ask, and who stays responsible for the meaning? The answer comes back shaped like the question we put in.
The dialogue is concluded
The machine completes our sentences; we are still the ones who must mean them.
